The set is a fairly accurate reproduction of the 1849 Jaques set. It is very well made and excellent for play. I bought the red and white version and am delighted with it. I would be more than happy to get other Royal Chess Mall sets.
This is a beautiful set of chess pieces. The design from 1849 is arguably perfection. I especially like the rooks because they have a noticeably wider base than the knights and bishops. They do count 5 points for crying out loud. That being said, all the pieces and pawns are so well done. The red that was used is stunning. I like high contrast between the armies when I play chess and got it with this red and white set. Red is more visible than black on the board in my eyes. It feels nostalgic using the same carved design that the top players from the 1850's were battling it out with...Morphy for one!
