I was drawn to these pieces for their historical/cultural associations. They owe their design to the original Staunton pattern, but at the same time are unlike traditional Staunton pieces, reflecting the functionality which was so often the case with Soviet design. I particularly like the slim shape, which might appear a bit fragile, but the pieces are well weighted, sit steadily on the board and fit the hand when being moved and captured. The pawns and bishops are particularly elegant. It has become one of my favourite sets, a pleasure to use. If you are looking for something a bit different, and with historical connotations, this is the very set.
Delivery was speedy, and the pieces arrived superbly packaged. I recommend RCM 100%.
This is a historically important chess set. It was used primarily in the soviet union from the 1930's through the 1960's. It was the favored Chess set of Botvinnik who was the Soviet Chess powerhouse during that era. There were several variations of this set over the years. However in my opinion this is the nicest and most aesthetic version. This set is accurate to the original and even the originals had variations. Royal Chess Mall's interpretation is excellent. The proportions and the knight are done very well and pleasing to the eye. The set plays well and feels good in the hand. The other thing is that the dark pieces are made of golden rosewood. This wood is now for ecological reasons not being used. So this makes this set even more limited and exclusive. This is now one of my favorite Chess sets and I highly recommend it.
