A lovely set, obviously Staunton-inspired, but with a number of differences, notably the knights and the king's finial. I was initially unsure of the flamboyant knights, but they are easy to move and not too difficult to handle, while the finial is very delicately done. In my opinion, though, the real stars are the rooks - solid and sturdy, and well-weighted like all the other pieces.
The bud rosewood is a stunning reddish-brown, and very pleasing on the eye. The standard of craftsmanship is quite exquisite.
The set I bought was 'slightly imperfect'. I spent quite a while trying to spot the slight imperfection, but all I could find were some rough edges on the felt, easily remedied by a couple of minutes with nail scissors!
It speaks volumes for RCM's quality control standards that they consider a virtually perfect set 'imperfect'.
If you're looking for a set which is familiar yet eye-catchingly different, this one is recommended.
I’ve received my item in good conditions, but this item had a red king darker than the other pieces, but was resolved by RCM
The first thing you notice about these pieces when you unwrap them is their big size.
Yes, 4.6" King is VERY big, really. You need a chessboard with 60mm squares, or even a bit bigger.
Then the design, you immediately feel a professional level achievement. Beautiful design and very careful workmanship.
This is a "slightly imperfect" chess set (pieces only). If you examine each piece carefully, you might find what could be called imperfection, if you had a strong sense of observation and a very critical mind, otherwise, trust me, nobody will notice anything if you don't tell them.
The knights' heads are very slightly tilted to the left. If you must call this imperfection.
Also, when you look at the king from the top, you may notice a very slight out of center inclination.
The only thing I didn't quite like about the design is the top of the Rook. I think it should better be a bit thicker.
I took some pictures in comparison with my favorite Reykjavik chess set I use daily to give some idea why such pieces are expensive.
Bishops and Rooks do not differ much than the standard Staunton design, but still very nicely done.
Pawn top sphere is a bit smaller than I would have expected, but acceptable.
The neck of each piece narrows nicely and not too much to make it fragile. All pieces look and feel very sturdy.
The weight and feel of these pieces is very pleasant indeed, and each piece is very carefully wrapped with sponge for protection during transport.
I have checked many sellers before buying from the Royal Chess Mall. I assure you, they are the best. Delivered within a week time by DHL.
I already purchased the Alexandria chess pieces too, before receiving this "Spartacus".

These chess pieces arrived in perfect condition without any mishap or damage. A wonderful work of carving by hand with the design and rosewood bud, make this chessmen a luxury. Without a doubt the most beautiful and wonderful chess pieces that I have ever acquired. The Spartacus chess pieces in bud rosewood and boxwood is a work of art. The King stands tall at 4.6 inches with a unique design on the crown. I like it since it is different from all the chess pieces that I have in my collection. The other distinguishing design of the pieces is the twin rings in the bases of all the pieces.
The pieces arrived on the date promised, and was individually wrapped in a foam material so they were protected during shipment. The weight of the pieces is within range of what was declared in the site, and I was happy about that.
I got these pieces in the slightly imperfect pieces section. Understandably, there are some minor imperfections. Overall, however, I am happy with that since it is what it is. Another comment that I have is that the packing department people should always include a card when they ship the item This is my third purchase, and I never got a card.
In conclusion, I am pleased with the purchase, despite those minor defects and omissions. I certainly will purchase chess pieces again from Royal Chess Mall.
