I purchased these 2.8” Golden Rosewood Tournament Staunton Chess Pieces together with Royal Chess Mall’s 16" Walnut & Maple Printed Chess Board – Matte Finish Tournament Board (with 40 mm squares), and the combination has exceeded my expectations.
The proportions are excellent. These are compact pieces, but they still have the look and feel of a proper tournament Staunton set rather than a travel set. The 40 mm squares on the 16” board are a very comfortable match, giving each piece enough room while keeping the overall footprint compact and ideal for a desk or small table.
The pieces themselves are beautifully made. They are well weighted, stable, and have a satisfying feel when played. The knights are especially impressive for a set in this price range, and every piece is cleanly turned and finished. The golden rosewood has beautiful natural grain and subtle variation in color, giving the set the warmth and character that only real wood can provide.
I also appreciate the compact proportions. They feel substantial in the hand without being oversized, making them perfect for anyone who wants a traditional wooden Staunton set but doesn’t have room for a full tournament-size board.
Finally, I was pleasantly surprised that Royal Chess Mall included storage pouches for both the pieces and the board. That was a thoughtful addition that I wasn’t expecting.
One thing buyers should be aware of is that, because these are made from natural wood, there is some variation in color from piece to piece. For example, my white king is slightly lighter than some of the other white pieces, and a few of the pawns differ subtly in tone.
Overall, I am extremely happy with this purchase. I was looking for a high-quality compact wooden chess set that I could enjoy for many years, and this combination is exactly what I was hoping for. I would gladly recommend these pieces to anyone looking for a traditional Staunton design with a smaller footprint.
Ich habe für mein kleines Schachbrett (Feldgröße 40mm) passende Staunton-Figuren gesucht. Bei RoyalChessMall wurde ich fündig, für mich ein sehr schönes Figurenset (Königshöhe 2,8“). Lieferung war extrem schnell (5 Tage von Indien nach Deutschland).
