The Gold Standard for Serious Play: 4.1" Pro Staunton Chessmen

The Pro Staunton Series is hand-carved for the high-stakes environment of chess tournaments and club games. The chessmen feature professional proportions, smooth gameplay, durability, and the iconic Staunton style. The set contains finely carved knights, weighted, proportionally sized, and balanced pieces.

The chessmen are handcrafted from premium Natural Boxwood and Ebonised Boxwood. With strong visual contrast, professional-grade value, and smooth finish, the chessmen are trusted by professional players worldwide.

Another highlight of the set is four queens, making it suitable for tournament play where pawn promotions frequently occur. However, the handcrafted nature can cause minor variations in wood grain and finish. This further enhances the uniqueness and authenticity of every set.

Why the Pro Staunton Series is a Choice of Competitors?

  • Professional Weight & Balance: Double-weighted pieces with "thud" stability ensure pieces don’t trip during rapid blitz or intense endgames
  • Tournament Regulation Size: The 4.1-inch King with a wide 1.9-inch (47mm) base conforms to international standards for oversized tournament boards.
  • Artisanal Craftsmanship: While the Knights are the hallmark of all high-quality sets, the Staunton craftsmanship of this set makes it a functional masterpiece.
  • Practicality for Promotion: Go for effortless pawn promotion during competitive play with two additional Queens (4 Queens total)
  • Premium Protection: Premium finish, combined with high-quality green felt bases, helps protect the board from scratches and ensures silent, smooth movement

Ideal For

  • Tournament & Club Play, looking for professional standards in size and weight
  • Serious Chess Players, seeking reliable handling and clarity during play and analysis
  • Chess Training & Academies, investing in structured learning environments, coaching sessions, and tournament practice
  • Chess Collectors, showcasing traditional craftsmanship and timeless aesthetics

Why Collectors & Grandmasters Choose Royal Chess Mall?

At Royal Chess Mall, we offer handcrafted tournament-grade equipment with a balance of precision engineering and artisanal heritage. From ethical sourcing of premium hardwoods to meticulous carving, each piece is ensured to have perfect proportion, weight, stability, and the signature “thud.”

Moreover, secure international shipping and protective packaging further ensure your investment arrives in pristine condition.

Does this set include a wooden chessboard?
No. This listing is for chess pieces only. However, you can find a matching board from our chess boards collection. We recommend a board with a 55-60mm square size to pair these 4.1-inch King pieces with.
Are these pieces heavy enough for Blitz chess?
Yes. The Pro Staunton pieces are weighted for extra stability and a low center of gravity.
Why are there 4 Queens included in the set?
The two extra Queens are added to comply with international tournament standards. They come in handy when the time comes to replace a promoted pawn, so you don’t need to look for an inverted Rook or a temporary marker.
Are these chess pieces tournament size?
Yes. FIDE standards require the King height to be between 3.75 and 4.1 inches. This Pro Staunton Set’s king height meets those tournament standards.

Honest Review – 4.1" Pro Staunton Weighted Chess Pieces

I’ve been using this 4.1" Staunton weighted set for a bit now, and I have to say it’s one of those purchases that actually feels worth it.

Board Compatibility (Important!)
I tested the pieces on two boards.
A 2 inch maple and walnut board, honestly it felt a bit cramped. The pieces look slightly crowded and do not have enough breathing room.
A 2.25 inch green board, this is where the set really shines. The proportions feel just right and everything looks much more balanced. I think it would be even better with slightly larger square sizes, unfortunately I do not have those to show.

My advice: stick to the Royal Chess Mall website’s recommended square size around 2.16 to 2.36 inches. You really cannot go wrong if you follow that. Please see the photos for board compatibility.

Storage Box
Since this is a fairly large set, it would be ideal to have a slightly bigger storage box to comfortably store everything. For reference, the storage box shown is 12.5 inch x 5.5 inch x 4 inch, which helps give a better sense of scale.

Unexpected Bonus Just Looking at Them 😄
This might sound funny, but I genuinely enjoy just looking at the pieces. Even when I am not playing, I catch myself admiring the craftsmanship. Not even joking, it is that satisfying.

Final Thoughts
A really solid set with great build quality and presence. Just make sure you pair it with the right board size to get the full experience.

I have been wanting a Staunton chess set for a long time, so finally getting this one made the whole experience feel special. The unboxing, in particular, was incredibly satisfying and memorable. This is my first set, and it definitely lived up to my expectations.

Magnificent Chess Pieces

I purchased these for my grandson who recently made his own chess board. He was excited and extremely impressed with the quality, colour and beautiful feel of the pieces. I’m sure he is going to become a keen chess player. His woodworking skills are excellent so he will probably make his own special case to keep the pieces in pristine condition.

A beautifully carved set for a great price

My set arrived right on time, and very safely packed, with all the pieces, especially the king, well protected.
I was enormously impressed with the carving quality, especially the Knights where a lot of manual work is required.
I loved the good sized Rooks, and I always thought the original historical Staunton design had undersized Rooks given their actual playing value.
The extra Queens is a great touch.
Very impressed.......

Excellent quality Staunton style boxwood chess prices. Black prices ebonised and look like real ebony. The knights are extremely well carved. The King height at 4.1 inches is slightly taller than the standard tournament height of 3.75 inches, but the larger size looks better on my boards which have 60 mm and 57 mm squares respectively, and was exactly as I ordered. The set was better than my expectations and are well weighted. Delivery was also speedy and within the time frame given. Am very pleased with the set and would order again
