I bought this 16” walnut and maple matte-finish board together with Royal Chess Mall’s 2.8” Golden Rosewood Tournament Staunton pieces, and the proportions are excellent. The 40 mm squares are a great match for compact Staunton pieces, leaving enough room for comfortable play while still giving the set a compact footprint. The board sits flat, has a pleasant matte finish that minimizes glare, and the walnut-and-maple color combination is elegant.
I have two small observations for future buyers. First, my board has a few tiny black printing specks on some of the light squares. They are only noticeable on close inspection and are invisible during normal play, so they don’t affect my enjoyment of the board. Second, the backing on my board is beige rather than the green backing shown in the product photos for the 16” version. I actually don’t mind the beige, but it’s worth noting that the backing color may vary from the photos.
Overall, I’m very happy with this purchase. It pairs beautifully with compact Staunton pieces, looks great on a desk or coffee table, and I’d gladly recommend it.
