1950's Soviet Latvian Chess Pieces are modeled after one of the favorite Latvian designs of Soviet Grandmaster Mikhail Tal.
The pieces have a unique and slender design which is aesthetically pleasing in their elegance. Wide Bases and sleek tops consistent in king ,queen and bishop make it a fresh change from the traditional staunton design.
Knights are unusually large with their manes only on one side. The pieces have been double weighted using a combination of iron and lead studs to improve there playablility on the chess board.
No wonder, this is one of the most popular designs of the soviet era !
Fact: The popularity of this design increased massively after it featured in the popular TV Series- The Queen's Gambit.
