I don’t usually write product reviews, but this board genuinely deserves one. I’m very happy with the 1950’s Dubrovnik Folding Chess Board (57 mm / 2.25" squares). The combination of Golden Rosewood and Maple gives the board a warm, elegant contrast, and the overall finish looks refined and well crafted. The board feels solid and has a nice weight to it.
The folding design with internal felt-lined storage is very practical. The compartments are spacious, and the soft lining helps protect the pieces and avoid scratches while keeping them organized. The board also closes securely without putting pressure on the pieces.
The 57 mm (2.25") square size is also very versatile and works well with a range of tournament chess sets. I tested several piece sets to help visualize how different proportions look on the board.
With the 3.75" German Knight Tournament Series (38 mm king base), the board has a classic tournament look with more open space around each piece.
With the 3.9" Craftsman Series (41 mm king base), the spacing looks very balanced and elegant.
With the 4.1" Pro Staunton set (47 mm king base), the board has a fuller appearance but is still comfortable for play. All pieces from this larger set, including two extra queens, fit inside the storage compartments and the board still closes without any issue. Please see the photo, as I used this set as the reference since it is the largest chess set I currently own.
The board also includes a free Royal Chess Mall drawstring storage bag, which works well as a simple dust cover during storage. It was actually a pleasant surprise because the website didn’t mention that it was included, so it felt like a nice little bonus.
This board with storage is exactly like you see in the photos. What you cannot tell in the photos is the level of quality. This is well-made with great attn to detail. This is a perfect companion to your Dubrovnik or Austrian coffeehouse style set. Beautiful as a board when set up and excellent storage. I am very pleased.
It's the best standard tournament-sized folding wooden board I have ever seen
This is an amazing folding chess board, perfect for the unweighted Dubrovnik pieces that I also ordered. The quality and craftsmanship are impressive. However, don't think that because it is folding it is in any way travel friendly. This board is HEAVY, large, and incredibly solid. It has space to contain the Dubrovnik set. Matched with the Dubrovnik pieces, I dare say that it is the ultimate chess set--the only one you'll need! Of all my chess sets, this is the one I'll choose to save if there's a fire. It is an excellent historical reproduction, and as such does not come with algebraic notation, but a version with that might an interesting and useful innovation. Regardless, this is a phenomenal board as is.
The quality is excellent. The playing surface is smooth. Pieces inside will move a bit if traveling with it so some extra packing solution needed. If used as a storage solution on a shelf it is perfect.
Love the 1950 Dubrovnik folding board! Work of craftsmanship and beautiful. I have it displayed as it too good to store away!
A very nice board, with room inside for the 1950 Dubrovnik pieces.
Great to have a piece of history with this board. Incredible job by the manufacturers of Royal Chess Mail, wood of great quality, nice colors really shine, perfect contrast between white and dark squares.
A perfect combo with my Dubrovnik pieces non weighted, to respect the tradition of this historical set.
Perfect to store these pieces inside any take the set anywhere to replay chess games for training, without compromises with the quality. A little weighted to travel but you have the best foldable chess set ever with you everywhere. Thanks to Royal Chess Mail for this beautiful piece of chess history, my favorite set now, equal to an old one chess pieces only of John Jaques, Reykjavik 1972 replica,
