The 1904 Cambridge Springs International chess tournament inspired this reproduction chess set. Very well crafted in ebony and boxwood, the knight distinguishes itself from other typical equestrian figures. Some may call it a Llama, others say a laughing horse. Either way, it's quite enjoyable and notably unique amongst most other chess knights. Along with comments from my friends regarding the knight, some also remarked on the hefty weight of the ebony pieces (measured at 17% more than the boxwood counterparts). An elegant set with early 20th century styling, and a nice addition to my collection.
Am very pleased with this excellent reproduction in ebony and natural boxwood of the Cambridge Springs set, as used in the first US international tournament in Cambridge Springs, Pennsylvania in 1904. (Last year I bought the cheaper ebonised version of the set, but the light pieces were were a disappointing streaked dark coffee colour which I decided I couldn't live with). The ebony and natural boxwood version is well worth the extra cost.
