Minimalist Staunton Alternative: The 3.8" Bundesform German Chess Pieces

This one’s an alternative to the traditional Staunton chessmen that feels different, yet conforms to the tournament standards. The set of Bundesform chess pieces emerged in Germany during the 1930s. Representing a classic European silhouette, it gained international fame during the 1936 Munich Chess Olympiad.

The Bundesform (Federal Form) features a clean visual and highly functional design. Stripping the fragile, ornate details, these pieces are carefully proportioned to offer durability, clarity, and a smooth playing experience. Each piece is handcrafted by master artisans from Ebonised boxwood (dark side) and natural boxwood (light side). Chess players, collectors, and historians seeking distinctive tournament chess equipment continue to admire this set even today.

Key Features

  • Historical Authenticity: A reproduction of the classic German tournament chess style, based on the early 20th-century European heritage
  • Distinct Staunton Alternative: A simplified, robust design with the iconic, unadorned knight makes this set incredibly durable for rapid, blitz, and heavy club games.

What makes Bundesform chess pieces different from Staunton pieces?
The Bundesform (Federal Form) is a minimalist design alternative to the Staunton chessmen. It is a historic German design created in the 1930s, featuring smooth, unadorned shapes and influenced by the European chess heritage. The highly simplified Knight is the key differentiator of this chess design that offers maximum durability and clear piece recognition.
Does this listing include the chessboard?
No. This listing is for the 34 handcrafted chess pieces only. However, you can complete your setup by pairing these chessmen with a board featuring 1.96-inch to 2.16-inch (50mm to 55mm) squares.
What does "Ebonised Boxwood" mean?
It is a premium, dense version of the natural boxwood, created through a specialized treatment to achieve the deep, lustrous black finish of genuine Ebony. As a result, it offers a luxury aesthetic at a highly accessible price point.
Can I use this chess set for club or tournament play?
Yes. The 3.8-inch king height is compatible with tournament-style boards (50-55 mm squares) and regulations. In fact, the Bundesform chess set gained recognition when it was used in the 1936 Chess Olympiad.

I had been searching for a modest, well-crafted chess set. I searched through etsy, Amazon, local makers businesses, had no luck.

I gravitate to minimal, simple designs. I was also searching for a set that included two queens and a king piece that was around 3.75" - 4" tall. I wanted a set that I could pass down to the next generation, and one that would not break the bank.

I tried to ask online streamers about what physical chess set they recommend, I searched through YouTube. I found chess.com forums useful. I was not aware of what the tournament standards were, but wanted a future-proof set if we get back to playing live games again after the pandemic.

Justification for purchase: It's just nice to have a tactile game available, versus playing digitally the majority of the time.

I'm quite impressed by their product. I'm not being paid to say this.

The pieces were packed with great care, individually wrapped, and had a packet of silica gel beads in the plastic bag.

I plan to match the set with a board eventually, or I may make one myself. For now, I am using a 20" vinyl board I found from a different seller.

The pieces are heavy enough they should not knock over easily in a breeze.

Mr Rick

Really cool set, based on the Bauhaus style (used in the Munich 1936 chess olympics apparently!) Big solid pieces and great quality. Thought it might take ages to turn up from India but was really quick.

Not easy to find a Bundesform set in the UK, something I had been looking at for a time. So I was very pleasantly surprised to see RCM are offering this. Along with a number of other very interesting sets. Quality is superb at this price.
