A lovely set, obviously Staunton-inspired, but with a number of differences, notably the knights and the king's finial. I was initially unsure of the flamboyant knights, but they are easy to move and not too difficult to handle, while the finial is very delicately done. In my opinion, though, the real stars are the rooks - solid and sturdy, and well-weighted like all the other pieces.
The bud rosewood is a stunning reddish-brown, and very pleasing on the eye. The standard of craftsmanship is quite exquisite.
The set I bought was 'slightly imperfect'. I spent quite a while trying to spot the slight imperfection, but all I could find were some rough edges on the felt, easily remedied by a couple of minutes with nail scissors!
It speaks volumes for RCM's quality control standards that they consider a virtually perfect set 'imperfect'.

I bought this travel chess set as a keepsake for my recently deceased father, almost as if it were a final gift from him, as his passing occurred just a few days before my birthday.
I was looking for a functional chess set that I could easily take with me anywhere. I was immediately attracted by the photos of this model on the Royal Chess Mail website, after hesitating between it and their folding travel chess sets. What appealed to me here was the complete box, which closes securely, as well as the drawers for storing the pieces. This avoids having to store the pieces inside the board itself, as is the case with folding travel sets.
You can also play or replay games from books or annotated collections by placing the pieces along the edges of the board or on the top section of the box. It is genuinely practical.
The pieces have a classic Staunton design, with bishops featuring an almost vertical slit. The proportions between the pieces are perfect, with a special mention for the knights, which are particularly well crafted. This is quite rare with pieces of this size, and even more so for a travel set.
The case is beautiful, both open and closed. It would look perfectly at home on a desk, for example. It is fairly substantial and quite heavy, so carrying it around every day in its current form may not be ideal. However, Royal Chess Mail also provides a small pouch for storing the pieces. I think I will look for a protective sleeve for the board so that I can safely carry it in a backpack or briefcase.
I think this format is actually perfect for travelling: a single, non-folding piece, ideal for placing on a train or airplane tray table, even if it sticks out slightly. In my opinion, it is more practical than a folding travel chessboard.
The woods used are of very high quality. The golden rosewood used for the pieces is beautiful, with a lovely combination of light and dark grain. The chessboard has a matte finish, which does pick up fingerprints a little, but it cleans easily with a soft cloth.
The colours of the squares are perfectly harmonious with the pieces: neither too dark nor too light, with no visual fatigue or distracting contrast when playing or reading a position.
The pieces slide nicely across the board when you want to move quickly, replay variations or work on openings, for example. The pieces are magnetic and stay firmly in place, but the magnets are just the right strength. They are not excessively strong, as is often the case with magnetic chess sets. Here, you never have any difficulty lifting a piece from its square because of the magnet.
In fact, the Royal Chess Mail team has got the balance absolutely right. You could almost think that the pieces are slightly weighted. This is the first time I have experienced this with a magnetic chess set, and it makes the set particularly pleasant to use.
The proportions of the pieces relative to the squares are perfect — as you can see in the photos with four pawns on a single square, or the rook lying down on the board. If I were to be extremely picky, perhaps the King’s base takes up just a little too much space on its square. But in actual use, this is not an issue, and the proportions remain perfectly logical in relation to the other pieces.
This set has a very high symbolic value for me because it was, in a way, my father’s final “gift”. It fits perfectly into my collection, and not only as a travel set. I have to admit that its practical storage and its ability to sit neatly on my desk mean that it sometimes replaces my traditional size 5 or 6 sets when I want to replay historical games or work on my chess.
Now I just need to find a beautiful carrying case or a small attaché case for the chessboard to make it easier to transport.
What a beautiful set created by Royal Chess Mail, exactly in keeping with its minimalist name and elegant gift edition. It is a magnificent object that will appeal to anyone who appreciates beautiful chess sets and beautifully crafted pieces.
I had already loved Royal Chess Mail’s unweighted Dubrovnik set with the folding chessboard case, and once again I am extremely satisfied with my purchase.
And I almost forgot to mention the excellent packaging: everything was very well protected, and the shipping and delivery were both fast. Their chat service is also excellent, with consistently quick responses and very good advice.
One final suggestion: if I were to make another purchase from Royal Chess Mail right now, it would be incredible if the team created a small-format travel set featuring the Dubrovnik-style pieces.

Fantastiske Fiskene

Perfect handmade chess board. High quality finishes, no sharp edges or between squares, and all joints are polished. The surface is a little shiny but perfect to play.
Shipment package is very good protecting the board properly. Foam is placed along the edges and on both faces.
I asked them to stick a fragile sticker to avoid problems during transport (by plane, by truck,...), this trick usually works quite well.
Communication with the company was perfect, answering very fast and solving the doubts.

Beautifully made pieces, crafted with attention to detail and whose antique effect captures the spirit of the 19th century. They are solid and sturdy, perhaps not ideal for playing blitz, but they were probably never intended for that 180 years ago! My pieces were 'slightly imperfect', but close inspection revealed only a very minor mark (about 1mm in size!) on the white king's crown and on the underside of a black piece, not the sort of blemishes you would notice unless you were an obsessive stickler for detail, in other words nothing to worry about.

The board has an attractive golden palissander -and-maple appearance with good color contrast that makes the pieces easy to distinguish. The wood grain is appealing and the border is neatly finished, giving it a classic look. The square size appears well matched to the Botvinnik–Flohr pieces (which I purchased as well), resulting in a balanced playing surface. Very elegant together.

I purchased the 3.9" Craftsman Knight Golden Rosewood together with the 20" Legacy Golden Rosewood Luxery Chess Board to match the set. Even though the delivery had a few issues with FedEx the items arrived really well packaged. I have to say that after a lot of research wanting a quality chess set, you cannot go wrong with Royal Chess Mall products. The craftsmanship it is next level, the only reason I gave 4 stars is because some of the Golden Rosewood are much lighter than the rest. See the 2 knights. I understand that it's due to timber shades but they could match the sets better to get an even colour. I am tempted to get now a larger set...

Kunstværker – 5* levering inden for en uge til Skotland

Et flot skakspil. Det er et smukt blikfang på vores bord. Marmorens årer ser så unikke og udsøgte ud.

Jeg er begyndt at samle på 3,25-tommers sæt. Dette Reykjavik-sæt er nummer 3 i min samling. Hvad jeg godt kan lide ved dette sæt: Det er et sæt, man kan tage med til klubben, på caféen eller endda have derhjemme. Det er et godt Staunton-mønster uden forvirrende designelementer. Det er mindre og lettere end nogle turneringssæt – eller på niveau med dem. Alligevel er det stort nok til, at man ikke støder ind i andre brikker, når man spiller. Det passer perfekt på et bræt med 2 tommer / 50 mm felter, som det ses på mit billede. Ulempen ved sættet er tårnene. Toppen ser ekstremt skrøbelig ud med de dybe udskæringer og den tynde brystning. De vil helt sikkert knække ved selv den mindste stødpåvirkning. Dette er det værste designelement ved Reykjavik-designet – det dårlige tårndesign. Jeg vil ikke anbefale at spille blitz med dette sæt. Springerne har et tegneserieagtigt design og er ikke et Reykjavik 72 WCC-springer-design. Det er altså et lettere, varmere og mere hyggeligt design sammenlignet med 72-designet. For det meste er det et sæt af god kvalitet til afslappet spil og måske analyse, men efter min mening er det lige en smule for stort til analyse.

Fremragende, ældet lakeret buksbom; de bejdsede dele ligner i højere grad farven på det eksotiske træ: Purpleheart, der er højt værdsat for sin naturlige lilla farve, som kun findes i hjertet af det amerikanske kontinent og er meget efterspurgt blandt samlere. Et meget behageligt og ergonomisk sæt.

Meget smukke Pro Staunton 4,1» brikker fremstillet af vægtet palisander, der ligger godt i hånden, når de kombineres med det 21« Green and Maple HDMR-skakbræt. En passende ramme for disse mesterværker!

I purchased these 2.8” Golden Rosewood Tournament Staunton Chess Pieces together with Royal Chess Mall’s 16" Walnut & Maple Printed Chess Board – Matte Finish Tournament Board (with 40 mm squares), and the combination has exceeded my expectations.

Proportionerne er fremragende. Det er kompakte brikker, men de fremstår stadig som et ægte Staunton-turneringssæt snarere end et rejsesæt. De 40 mm store felter på det 16” store bræt passer rigtig godt sammen, så hver brik har tilstrækkelig plads, samtidig med at det samlede fodaftryk forbliver kompakt og ideelt til et skrivebord eller et lille bord.

Brikkerne i sig selv er smukt udført. De har en god vægt, står stabilt og føles tilfredsstillende at spille med. Springerne er særligt imponerende for et sæt i denne prisklasse, og hver eneste brik er præcist drejet og færdigbehandlet. Det gyldne palisandertræ har en smuk naturlig åretegning og subtile farvevariationer, hvilket giver sættet den varme og karakter, som kun ægte træ kan give.

Jeg sætter også pris på de kompakte proportioner. De føles solide i hånden uden at være for store, hvilket gør dem perfekte til alle, der ønsker et traditionelt Staunton-sæt i træ, men ikke har plads til et bræt i fuld turneringsstørrelse.

Endelig blev jeg glædeligt overrasket over, at Royal Chess Mall havde vedlagt opbevaringsposer til både brikkerne og brættet. Det var en gennemtænkt detalje, som jeg ikke havde forventet.

One thing buyers should be aware of is that, because these are made from natural wood, there is some variation in color from piece to piece. For example, my white king is slightly lighter than some of the other white pieces, and a few of the pawns differ subtly in tone.

Alt i alt er jeg yderst tilfreds med dette køb. Jeg var på udkig efter et kompakt skakspil i træ af høj kvalitet, som jeg kunne have glæde af i mange år, og denne kombination er præcis, hvad jeg havde håbet på. Jeg vil med glæde anbefale disse brikker til alle, der leder efter et traditionelt Staunton-design, der ikke fylder så meget.

Jeg er fuldstændig tilfreds med dette 4,1» Pro Staunton-skakspil. Brikkerne og det 21« store bræt ankom i perfekt stand, sikkert pakket med masser af bobleplast. Brikkerne i gyldent palisander er superfint udført, og den samlede kvalitet af sættet er helt enestående. Brikkernes vægt føles fantastisk under spillet, og opbevaringskassen i træ er en fremragende bonus til at holde alt sikkert. Jeg vil helt sikkert købe fra denne sælger igen i fremtiden!

Jeg købte dette 16” bræt i valnød og ahorn med mat finish sammen med Royal Chess Malls 2,8” Golden Rosewood Tournament Staunton-brikker, og proportionerne er fremragende. De 40 mm store felter passer perfekt til de kompakte Staunton-brikker, hvilket giver plads nok til at spille komfortabelt, samtidig med at sættet har et kompakt format. Brættet ligger fladt, har en behagelig mat overflade, der minimerer genskin, og farvekombinationen af valnød og ahorn er elegant.

Jeg har to små bemærkninger til fremtidige købere. For det første har mit bræt et par små sorte trykpletter på nogle af de lyse felter. De kan kun ses ved nærmere eftersyn og er usynlige under normalt spil, så de påvirker ikke min glæde ved brættet. For det andet er bagsiden på mit bræt beige i stedet for den grønne bagside, der vises på produktbillederne for 16”-versionen. Jeg har faktisk ikke noget imod den beige farve, men det er værd at bemærke, at farven på bagsiden kan afvige fra billederne.

Alt i alt er jeg meget tilfreds med dette køb. Det passer smukt sammen med kompakte Staunton-brikker, ser flot ud på et skrivebord eller et sofabord, og jeg vil gerne anbefale det.

The Alexandria Luxury Staunton pieces in Ebony and Bud Rosewood are another work of art from Royal Chess Mall. The design and craftsmanship are amazing up close. The incredible detailing on the Knights themselves makes this set stand above all the others. I'm a big fan of the Ebony and Bud Rosewood combination, I think they are stunning next to each other.

Dette sæt supplerer virkelig de Alexandria Luxury Staunton-brikker i farven »Burnt«, som jeg tidligere har købt. Sammen udgør de de absolut bedste sæt i min samling.
