It completes/amplifies the wonderful experience of playing chess with the look and feel of a work of art.
And who knows, it may inspire (one of) our grandchildren to take up this beautiful game.

This is my first wooden set and I’m amazed. To my surprise, the pawns are much nicer than I expected. They are 28.5mm in diameter (instead of 27mm as specified) with a nice chunky body which gives this set a lot of presence even in a 2.25” (57mm) square board. They achieved the perfect size balance.

About the weight, the set is a little lighter than specified. However, they are more stable by desing than by weight. The king is 45g, but I have heavier pieces that are not more stable than this set. I actually like the fact that they are not that heavy, so there’s less chances of ruining my veneered board if I drop them on it by accident. I have ruined boards this way before with very heavy plastic pieces.

There’s some minor imperfections, like a single pawn with improper staining and very small chips at the top, which hopefully can be replaced, and rook crenelations are not perfectly aligned, but to be honest, it’s a great set regardless.

Maybe in the future I will get the golden rosewood version to avoid worrying about color wear, but I am certain it would blend too much with my board.

I doubt this set can disappoint anyone. Get it while you can!

I've been teaching my nephew to play chess and we've been using plastic pieces however one day he came round and saw my wooden set and he fell in love with using wooden pieces so every time we play a game now it has to be yes you guessed the wooden pieces so I decided to treat him to this set as it wasn't very expensive and I have to admit I'm very impressed by it and my nephew obviously absolutely loves it, it's Fantastically carved yet simple in design and nicely weighted the sheesham wood as well as boxwood means it's going to be very durable for every day use and even for competitive chess highly recommended

Although the website recommends it for pieces up to a 4 inch king height, I tested it with a 4.1 inch Pro Staunton weighted set with 4 queens. Even with the extra queens and slightly larger king, the pouch closes fully without any issue, as you can see in the photos I took. It does feel a bit tighter compared to smaller sets, but still works fine, which was a pleasant surprise.

The pouch is best suited for a 3.9 inch German Knight tournament series with 4 queens. From the open and closed photos, the 4.1 inch set is slightly tighter when closed, while the 3.9 inch set sits more comfortably and closes more naturally, but both work without any issues.

One thing missing from the product page is clear sizing information, so I measured it myself. For reference, the pouch is roughly cylindrical with about a 5 inch diameter and 8 inch height from the base to the string level. This gives a better idea of its actual capacity.

This pouch has a premium look and feel, with a soft leatherette exterior and a smooth inner lining that helps protect the chess pieces. I have also included a photo of the empty pouch to show the interior. The drawstring works well and closes securely without hassle.

I would recommend this if you are on a tighter budget and cannot get a storage box but still want something that serves the purpose well.

I finally understand why this German knight tournament set is so commonly used. I always see pro players on YouTube using this style, so I specifically looked for it. The customer service from Royal Chess Mall was very helpful, and that is how I found out this is called a German knight set.

The pieces feel balanced and stable, and the clean design makes them easy to recognize during play.

The shape, size, and weight make the pieces very easy to grab with no slipping, and the movement feels solid.

The knight is very satisfying to pinch. Its shape makes it easy to grip and move quickly, which is great for fast games.

For sizing reference, it works on both a 2.25 inch board, as shown on the green board in the photos, which gives more breathing room, and a 2 inch board, as shown on the walnut and maple board, which feels more compact and eye pleasing.

Overall, great clarity and playability. Now I see why it is a tournament standard. I already have four chess piece sets, but if I ever had to keep only two, this would definitely be one of them.

Beautiful addition for my custom board.

This purchase was my first from RCM, and it won't be my last! The ebony board and matching pieces are fantastic! The pieces were carved by hand, but I have yet to find any defect in craftsmanship. Likewise, the board is exquisite; I can't find a thing wrong with it. I bought this board/set to use as a new family heirloom, and I'm so glad I did! I am not disappointed; I don't think you'll be disappointed either! (If you buy quality, then it only hurts once!)

Fell in love with this board when I first saw it. The raised squares and corner accents combined with a beautiful wood grain make this truly a luxury board to display.

I wanted to get a really nice set that I could use with one of my smaller boards. The 2.6″ Russian Zagreb Chess Set was perfect for that. Quality and workmanship is very high and I am happy to display these.

Honest Review – 4.1" Pro Staunton Weighted Chess Pieces

I’ve been using this 4.1" Staunton weighted set for a bit now, and I have to say it’s one of those purchases that actually feels worth it.

Board Compatibility (Important!)
I tested the pieces on two boards.
A 2 inch maple and walnut board, honestly it felt a bit cramped. The pieces look slightly crowded and do not have enough breathing room.
A 2.25 inch green board, this is where the set really shines. The proportions feel just right and everything looks much more balanced. I think it would be even better with slightly larger square sizes, unfortunately I do not have those to show.

My advice: stick to the Royal Chess Mall website’s recommended square size around 2.16 to 2.36 inches. You really cannot go wrong if you follow that. Please see the photos for board compatibility.

Storage Box
Since this is a fairly large set, it would be ideal to have a slightly bigger storage box to comfortably store everything. For reference, the storage box shown is 12.5 inch x 5.5 inch x 4 inch, which helps give a better sense of scale.

Unexpected Bonus Just Looking at Them 😄
This might sound funny, but I genuinely enjoy just looking at the pieces. Even when I am not playing, I catch myself admiring the craftsmanship. Not even joking, it is that satisfying.

Final Thoughts
A really solid set with great build quality and presence. Just make sure you pair it with the right board size to get the full experience.

I have been wanting a Staunton chess set for a long time, so finally getting this one made the whole experience feel special. The unboxing, in particular, was incredibly satisfying and memorable. This is my first set, and it definitely lived up to my expectations.

Great Value and excellent chess set despite the slightly imperfect condition. My chess set had some imprefecctions in the lacquer with the sheen. I had to really hunt to find them, and we are talking very minor. I paired this Red and Black 3.8" Staunton Chess men with a 2.125" Queen's Gambit Chess board and the colors really pop and look amazing.

Barely noticeable imperfections, you have to really look to find them, and probably would never find them just playing. Great size for 2.25 squares, and contrasts nicely with my boards. The Zagreb reproduction is one of my favorite styles and beyond expectations at this price. Thanks!

I started a small chess collection from Royal Chess Mall. My favorites are the Lessing set, this set, and the Improved Lardy set. For coffee house chess, you can’t beat the Improved Lardy. That said, the 1849 Jacques Cook set is definitely a more top tier set with higher quality and execution. It is very popular at RCM, and it took a while to acquire. It’s a distinctive and attractive Staunton design you would be happy to display or play with. Highly recommended and deserving of its popularity.

The quality is simply amazing , an amazing piece to own

I had been looking for an upgraded chess set that included bud rosewood pieces. I was also looking for a set that would work with well with my 16" premier travel chess set that I had previously purchased from RCM. I like smaller boards. Smaller bud rosewood pieces are not so easy to find. However, this set works perfectly well with the 1.73" squares of the board. The pieces are beautifully crafted. They were expertly packaged with no flaws. They look just as good as many of the sets sold on competitors sites at much higher prices. It should be noted that this set of pieces will not fit properly into the foam cutouts of the 16" travel board. I knew this would be the case. No problem, I'll just use a separate box. I could not be happier with this purchase.
